Miami mayor Francis Suarez’s presidential campaign recently came under scrutiny after it was revealed that a political action committee (PAC) supporting him received a $500,000 donation from PassionForest, LLC. This donation sparked further attention when the Campaign Legal Center filed a complaint, alleging that PassionForest, supposedly based in China, violated campaign financing rules, including federal laws prohibiting foreign nationals from making PAC donations.
The Involvement of MoonPay CEO
According to the filing submitted by Suarez’s PAC, the donation was made by Ivan Soto-Wright, a prominent crypto executive and the CEO and co-founder of MoonPay, a U.S.-based cryptocurrency trading company. Soto-Wright’s representatives confirmed that he made the donation but clarified that PassionForest, LLC is a company he owns and controls entirely, emphasizing that it has no affiliation with the Chinese company sharing the same name.
Despite this clarification, the Campaign Legal Center expressed concerns regarding straw donation rules. These rules prohibit individuals from donating to campaigns through a third party, possibly indicating a violation in this case. Soto-Wright’s law firm, however, maintained that the donation was a “personal contribution consistent with federal campaign finance laws.”
Denial of Chinese Involvement
Responding directly to the allegations, Mayor Suarez denied any involvement of a China-based company in his campaign donation, asserting that China has not contributed to any of his PACs. While he firmly denied any wrongdoing, the controversy surrounding the donation persists.
